Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ At the initiative of the Governor of Capital city and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar city, Ulaanbaatar is hosting the Northeast Asian Mayors’ Forum for the 3rd year on June 18-19.

This year’s forum is being held with participation of Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Beijing Municipal People’s Congress (BMPC) Zhang Qing, Vice Mayor I for Administrative Affairs of Seoul Metropolitan Government Yoon Joon Byeong, Mayor of Ulaan Ude City A.M.Golkov and representatives from Tokyo, the UN and more.

Representatives including 18 mayors, decision-makers of six countries and 300 delegates of international organisations are holding discussion under the topic ‘Low Carbon City Development: Improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions’.

Opening the Northeast Asian Mayors’ Forum, Mayor of Capital city and Governor of Ulaanbaatar S.Batbold said
“As the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, Capital city of Mongolia and a member of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), I am happy that Mongolia is hosting the forum. I would like to express my gratitude to all participants who attached importance to this forum and arrived in Ulaanbaatar.

Northeast Asian region is home to a quarter of the world population. In this regard, the topic that we are discussing today are regional and international issues because 60 percent of a total greenhouse gas is released in urban areas. On the other hand, we can’t deny the fact that greenhouse gas is showing impact on climate change and ecological revolutions. So, introducing selected technology that requires low expenses and shows result in a short time can be a good solution for development of a city.

Mongolia is severely affected by climate change due to its geographical location, vulnerable ecosystem and economic structure dependent on weather. The frequency of drought and dzud has been increasing, consequently  number of people moving from rural areas to large urban areas grows. It resulted in unplanned city expansion, and air and soil pollutions.”

He also expressed his hope that the forum will put the foundation to flourish effective partnership and cooperation of cities and introduce technologies to mitigate climate change, defining role and contribution of cities.

On the first day of the forum, sub-meetings were held with themes ‘Guidelines for Green City Development’ and ’Technology solutions of low carbon cities and good practices’.
